Marfa's Parks and Recreation Development Corporation (Parks & Rec) is an advisory board that provides the community with recreational facilities and maintains and beautifies the city parks.
Parks and Recreation work on a major project every year or two. In the last 10 years, Parks & Rec has added new basketball and volleyball courts and has upgraded the baseball/softball field with dark-skies-friendly stadium lighting, a new announcer’s booth, concession stand, restrooms, and playground equipment at Coffield Park. Travis Self Park received new playground equipment, new shade structures, and electrical upgrades. There are plans to add xeriscaping, a new irrigation system, additional trees, and a new water foundation to the dog parks later this year.
⇒Camping and alcohol are not allowed in the city parks. Parks are closed after dark.
⇒Dogs are not allowed in certain city parks. There is a designated dog park at Sunset Park at the corner of Oak and Russell Streets. The dog parks are allowed for use at the owner’s own risk.
⇒Owners are legally responsible for the dog’s behavior at all times.
⇒Dog handlers must be at least 16 years of age, and children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
⇒There is an adjacent dog park for small dogs that weigh less than 30 pounds.
Parks & Rec generally meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6 pm in the Casner Room at Marfa City Hall. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are having virtual meetings via Zoom. Please refer to City of Marfa website’s Home Page for the latest scheduling.
